Natural capital is similar to other forms of capital - financial, built (or physical), human, and social capital, all of which can produce economic outputs.
Natural capital is the world’s stock of natural assets and includes:
the rocks and soil beneath our feet
our streams, rivers and oceans
plants and all living things
In 2022, the New South Wales state government have released their Natural capital statement of intent. It recognises the multiple benefits that natural assets can bring to land managers, and sets out a framework for partnerships to increase the natural capital of the landscape.
What is “natural capital”?
A nature-positive world is one where the current state of ecosystem degradation has been halted, and instead our actions are repairing and regenerating nature.
A nature positive approach to managing natural capital enriches biodiversity, stores carbon, purifies water and reduces public health issues.
A nature positive approach enhances the resilience of our planet and our society.
What is “nature positive”?
The Nature Positive Plan provides a framework to guide the repair of nature across the Australian continent and incorporates the Nature Repair Market which aims to establish a marketplace to reverse Australia’s environmental decline.
